Since the beginning of the current century, the term “Green Buildings” has been repeated and negotiated
in all conferences and forums relating to architecture and sustainable building. The term gained a lot
of ambiguity among unspecialized people, where there is a misconception that it is limited to saving
energy and natural resources. In fact, the term is extended to a broader scale where it includes project
site selection and its link with the available transportations while taking into consideration the project’s
compliance with the environmental systems, selection of construction materials, and ensuring comfort
for those utilizing the building. Green Building can be defined as the process that maximizes the
efficiency in using resources as energy, water, and materials and ensures minimum impact on human
health and the environment. This should include all stages of the building’s life cycle, i.e., design,
construction, operation, maintenance, and re-use.

Green Building and Sustainable
Development:
The concepts of Green Building and Sustainable
Development meet in their common goals and
objectives. These two concepts are based on
achieving a balance between three bottom
lines, “the Three P’s / Three E’s,” which are
Profit (Economy), Planet (Ecology), and People
(Equity). Sustainable development is defined
as the development that meets the needs of
the present without compromising the ability
of future generations to meet their own needs,
whereas green building is only different in that
it cares about the building and construction
