tomation, business process management, busi-
ness process automation tools, service-oriented
architecture, and web services.
The management of system development is an
important part of such projects. Therefore, I have
included a chapter about project management
and the followed approach in this project.
The paper also checked the technology available
and the solutions that can be introduced to help
current processes. The problems that technol-
ogy can pose on the processes are determined;
the problems we face in management are de-
termined through a gap analysis; then we pro-
posed a solution through the use of software ap-
plications and smart devices used on top of the
service-oriented architecture. The architecture of
the applications was discussed to support the
scalability and integrations issues, those that
arise being listed with their proposed solutions.
This activity provided us with the understanding
of the possibilities of technological intervention
in the processes of managing diabetes. The pro-
cesses we have identified mostly included edu-
cation and treatment of patient by some medical
personal or by themselves. This implies that the
technological intervention should be assessed
against the risks, and the stakeholders involved
in the processes should also be considered in
proposing the solution.
In evaluating our proposed solution, we have a
subset of processes identified and modelled as
proposed business processes through a BPMN
diagram. This allowed us to understand the
magnitude of the interventions and identify the
stakes. I have included the proposed screens for
the applications (Interface Design), and the data-
base architecture for the application database.
The paper discussed the proposed solution in
detail and pointed out the standards that the so-
lution will need to follow and the issues related
to general practices of the health industry. Then
the paper focused on the procedures that are
included as standard for the management of
diabetes patients. Here, we included the pro-
cesses that the International Diabetes Federa-
tion (IDF) has identified for type 2 diabetes and
studied their guidelines in our context. The dis-
cussion advanced with the effect of the interven-
tion on other processes, the stakeholders and
the guidelines for preserving the standards for
health systems. Moreover, the chapter talked
more about the reasoning for the processes
chosen over others.
Stakeholder expectations and stakeholder anal-
ysis were also included. Then we discussed the
business aspects of the project and the changes
that should be made to implement the project,
like decentralized business management, de-
pendency management, usage of technology
and equipment, the feasibility of technical design
of the system, the risk analysis for the project,
legal and ethical issues, and future possibilities.
Further, we considered some measures that can
be regarded as monitoring tools for the success
or failure of the project, as evaluating criteria is an
important part of any evidence-based research,
and we introduced some possible criteria from a
personal point of view.
The paper also included reflection on the work
and included the aspects of learning in this re-
search paper. It included the SWOT analysis of
every aspect studied and personal evaluation
as well. It showed the opportunities from differ-
ent aspects of concepts discussed. In addition,
it presented how I have done the trade-offs in
the design of the proposed system. Moreover,
it discussed the opportunities and threats in the
methods that we used in our literature review
and provided aspects of learning concepts and
ideas through this kind of research. The reflec-
tion included the learning outcomes listed and
the effectiveness of these in personal knowl-
edge. Future learning opportunities were also
discussed in detail.
The paper ended with a conclusion to the prob-
lem and solutions and provided a comprehen-
sive recommendation about different aspects of
the project.
1.2 Problem statement
Diabetes is a major disease all over the world
and is related to many other diseases. Diabetic
patients are vulnerable to many other diseases
such as cardiovascular disease and blood pres-
sure. The prevention and management of the
disease is possible and needs attention from all
participants, medical and patient related, doc-
tors, medical staff, patients, patient’s family, and
care specialists. All need training and knowledge
to cope with the challenges that diabetes poses
to patients’ health. in addition to all of that, tech-
