of web/mobile services as part of the business
process. The dissertation focused on the hospi-
tal industry and sought to design an automated
business process that combines web/mobile
services with internal business architecture for
the diagnosis and treatment of people suffering
from type 2 diabetes.
2.1.1 Objectives:
• To design an automated business process
that that utilizes web services for diagnosing and
treating type II diabetes.
• To identify the importance of web services in
achieving business process efficiency.
• To evaluate the challenges associated with
web services in business process automation.
• To review the literature on business process
automation and the use of web services espe-
cially in the medical field (diabetes).
• To make recommendations on how web ser-
vices can be utilised for medical diagnosis and
treatments.
3. Data and service Design and integration:
The discussed design was derived with the
knowledge and technology we have today for
automation of businesses, particularly as related
to clinical pathways, and the usage of contem-
porary web and mobile technologies in the busi-
ness world.
3.1 Business Process Modelling
The processes were modelled using a tool
named BPMN (Business Process Model and
Notation). This provided a basis to design the
processes as needed. The tool is universally
used for this purpose and provides the function-
ality to design the basic to complicated busi-
ness process.

Manage Patient Diet Plan
For the sake of modelling the business process-
es, I have selected the most important and most
used process that is “Managing patient diet
plan”. This process is modelled with the details
of interaction with different actors and systems.
Below is the BPMN diagram of the process.
The Data Sources that are used in the BPMN are
described below.
Patient Weight / Previous Record
This is the Data that is retrieved from the hospital
system, the system that is already implemented
in the hospital. This will include the patient regis-
tration information and the weight of the patient,
so that the doctor and system should decide the
diet plans for the patient.
Diet Nutrition Record
The Diet Nutrition Record is a database that
contains different diet elements and their nutri-
tion values so that the diet that the patients take
can be used as a measure of nutrition they are
taking in.
Patient Diet Record
The Patient Diet Record is the record of the diet
elements / food items they are consuming in
their meals.
Patient Activity Record
The Patient Activity Record is the data about the
activities of the patient, such as exercise, or any
work.
Patient Glucose Alert
The Patient Glucose Alert is the reading sent by
the patient’s wearable device; this info is sent to
the patient’s mobile and to the doctor, through
the system.
Patient Glucose Levels
The Patient Glucose Level is the reading sent
from the wearable device to the system after
certain period of time, for tracking the patient’s
glucose levels.
3.2 Data Architecture
The database architecture provides the structure
of entities and relationships among the entities.
This data architecture was made specifically for
the diet management use-case. Data architec-
ture for other use-cases can exist, but here we
have demonstrated only the data architecture for
the diet management use-case.

3.3 Interface design:
3.3.1 Application description:
This application is for iOS users. It was designed
to fulfill our system’s requirements. In addition,
the following screenshots are for some of the
main tasks of our application. Also, there are two
possible users of the application and we can di-
vide them to clinicians and patients. However,
screenshots were focused on the patients so the
selected personas are two different patients with
different background and lifestyle. This applica-
