Submitted to Cardiff University in September 2014

T
he Health industry has seen
considerable advances in tech-
nology and has made much prog-
ress in preserving and improving
quality of life. The businesses that
are related to health are in constant
need of innovative technologies. I
have studied the possible interven-
tion of technology in the business
processes related to managing
type-2 diabetes. Diabetes is a ma-
jor disease and complex to man-
age, thus the possibility of tech-
nological intervention in business
processes, like managing diet and
managing blood glucose, can make
the processes efficient and easier.
It can provide the stakeholders
with desirable solutions and invalu-
able knowledge. The aspects of
business modelling, project man-
agement, design aspects, and risk
management should also be man-
aged to make this successful. The
standards of the health industry
and clinic management are also
important factors. The possibility of
technological intervention in busi-
ness processes comes with cer-
tain aspects, and trade-offs should
be made in consultation with the
stakeholders. Technological inter-
vention in diet management and
blood glucose management can
be prove to be worthy if the above
stated aspects are properly taken
care of.
1. Introduction
This document is a summary of a research disser-
tation, which included research and designed solu-
tions for problems faced by people involved in the
management of diabetes as a disease. The research
focused on the business aspects of managing dia-
betes and showed the problems and their solutions
using technology. “Diabetes Mellitus” occurs when
the human body is not able to use glucose. Type 2
diabetes is one in which the body cannot respond to
the insulin made in the body.
The health industry has embraced many technologi-
cal inventions and these technologies have benefited
human kind with amazing new possibilities, eradicat-
ing many diseases and creating opportunities for the
treatment and cure of the patients. Technological
intervention in any part of life should be dealt with
carefully, but in the health industry, it should be dealt
with very sensitively. The possibilities of making peo-
ple’s lives easier and helping them cope with disease
through the use of technology is an ongoing quest.
The paper presented a framework for the develop-
ment of technology solutions that can augment the
management of diabetes. In doing so, we have start-
ed the paper by looking into the problems and do-
main of these problems. First, we have done a litera-
ture review to gain knowledge about the disease, its
effects, and its preventions, as well as the standards
of medical organizations for managing diabetes, and
the complications the patient faces due to the dis-
ease. Then we focused on the procedures that the
doctors and medical staff take. The procedures are
in many different directions, from diet management,
activity management, to lifestyle and psychology.
They also include treatments such as foot care, eye
care, etc. These all are seen as a way of managing
the disease. In addition to that, we have viewed and
discussed the literature about business process au-
